Petition #20985832

Abstract

Ann McCormick, mother and guardian of Anne Maria Wells, states that the executors of her late husband, Dr. John B. Wells, divided the slaves belonging to his estate between herself and her daughter. Three of the slaves "have always been the family servants of your petitioner and her daughter and that their domestic comfort and convenience would be greatly promoted by these servants continuing to be the house servants of your petitioner and her ward." She states that her current husband, Dr. Charles McCormick, is a surgeon in the U. S. army and he is being stationed in California. McCormick understands that she may not remove the slaves from the state "without the order and authority of this Court" and that California, "as a free state," will not admit the slaves "as long as your petitioner's ward had an interest in them." McCormick asks that she be allowed to transport the three slaves and to claim them "as her interest in the whole of said negroes."
