On 4 January 1859, George H. Carman purchased Richard Fortie, a free person of color, "at a sale of Free Negroes" held by the sheriff of Baltimore County. Fortie had been convicted of larceny and as punishment was to serve as a slave for three years. Shortly thereafter, Fortie ran away, taking with him a "Horse Saddle and Bridle." Fortie was arrested that same night "in the yard of a Negroes House in York St Baltimore City." Fortie is currently in jail "at the personal expence" of the petitioner. Carman asks the court to extend Fortie's term of service and allow the slave to be sold out of state.
