Petition #20985920

Abstract

William C. Ghent owns a term slave named Amelia, who "is now about nineteen years of age, as more fully appears from the bill of sale of Solomon Choate to Peter Forder." On at least three occasions, Amelia has run away causing "much expenses in loss of her service & in recovering said slave." Amelia "vows & declares that she will not stay with your Petitioner but will run away from him if he takes her home." In addition, Ghent has reason to believe that Amelia helped another of his slaves, Amelia's sister Cilla, to run away. Because of Amelia's prior misconduct, Ghent considers it dangerous for her "to remain in the neighborhood, dangerous not only to himself but also to all his neighbors that own slaves." Ghent asks the court to extend Amelia's term of service and also give him permission to sell her out of state.
