Petition #20985928

Abstract

On 26 February 1857, John Jones Sr., a free man of color, bound his son, John Jones Jr., as an apprentice to Joseph Amos to learn the "art trade or mystery of Hod carrying." The indenture was to expire on 1 March 1860, when John Jones Jr. turned twenty-one. Joseph Amos later sold Jones's indenture to Frederick Amos. John Jones Jr. alleges that "an error was committed in the statement of his age in said bond and that he is now over the age of twenty-one years." He charges that Frederick Amos "detains him and refuses to let him ... go" even though he "hath knowledge" of the error. Jones Jr. petitions the court to subpoena Frederick Amos and to cancel his indenture.
