Petition #20985930

Abstract

In February 1859, the Baltimore City Criminal Court ordered that Maria Boston, a woman of color, be sold as a slave and serve for four years. On 5 March 1859, William Beale purchased Boston for thirty-one dollars, "with the intention of keeping her in his family." Less than two weeks later, she stole several items and ran away. When he recovered Boston, he put her in jail because she stated "that she would run away again as soon as she got an opportunity." Beale asks the court to let him sell her within the state and to extend Boston's term of slavery to "compensate him for his loss."

Result: Granted.
