Petition #20985935

Abstract

In January 1856, the court bound Benjamin Hinson, a free person of color, to Arthur Rich as an apprentice. With the court's permission, Rich later transferred the indenture to James Peters. Rich, acting as next friend to Hinson, alleges that Peters several times inflicted "brutal & cruel violence" upon Hinson (once "within the past month") and mistreated him in other ways. Rich alleges that Peters imprisoned Hinson "without cause" and that Peters plans to sell Hinson's indenture. Rich says that "it would be inhuman to require [Hinson] to remain with the said Peters any longer." He asks the court to subpoena Peters and to cancel the indenture.
