James W. Hunter, administrator of the estate of G. Grammar, asserts that he sold a sixty-year-old estate slave named Sam to James Allen for $216. Allen alleges that he can prove that Sam was "then diseased, if not actually insane." Sam died a few months after the purchase. Hunter and Allen have reached a compromise whereby Allen owes the estate half the purchase money plus court costs; Hunter asks the court to approve the arrangement.
