James S. Wilson states that he bought a term slave, William Gales, from the estate of Washington Thomas. At the time of purchase, Gales told Wilson that he "would not stay with him." Wilson "carefully explained" to Gales the consequences of his running away, but Gales still "ran off with out provocation. Wilson claims that the slave "has been well fed & Clothed since your petitioner owned him," yet Gales "shaved off his whiskers & moustache" to conceal his identity in preparation for his escape. Wilson asks that Gales's term of service be extended as compensation for his losses and that he be authorized to sell his term of service in or out of the state of Maryland.
