Petition #20985962

Abstract

Oliver Miller and James Franklin assert that they were attorneys who represented a group of slaves who were granted their freedom from John Collinson in October 1859. The petitioners expected no compensation for their services, but the freed slaves who were "able to work & obtain wages" agreed to work for the petitioners for a reasonable amount of time. Among the freed slaves were five children. The petitioners state that these children "are willing and anxious" to be bound to the petitioners and ask the court to authorize the indenture.
