Henry Hammett petitions the court for an order permitting him to sell a slave named Margaret, who belongs to his ward, Sarah E. Hammett. Hammett claims that Margaret is "difficult to manage and of a bad character" and has recently run away twice. He also charges that Margaret has "neglected her infants." Hammett assures the court that the interest on the money from the sale would be worth "double the amount of hire."
