Petition #20986019

Abstract

On 24 January 1859, the court indentured Alice Boston, a free person of color, to Oliver Merryman. Merryman complains that Boston "has been in the constant habit of running away, subjecting him to much trouble and great expense and an entire loss of time." He reports that Boston "is now confined in Jail in Washington and has been for some time." Merryman asks the court to extend Boston's indenture "as a compensation for expenses and the loss of his time," and he asks permission to sell "the time of said apprentice."
