Petition #20986026

Abstract

On 17 August 1858, the court indentured Cornelia Murray, a free person of color, to William George to learn housework. William's daughter, Mary George, alleges that her father did not clothe, feed, or support Murray "as required by the said Indenture." Instead, his wife and daughters supported Murray and the family "out of their own separate work labor & management." Mary George alleges that her father has removed Murray from the house, but keeps her at an unknown location. She says that her father intends to sell the balance of her indenture and use the proceeds for "his own separate use," a sale "not intended for any purpose that would benefit either the girl or the family." She asks the court to subpoena William George, to cancel Cornelia Murray's indenture to William, and to bind Murray to "some suitable person ... that the object of this court in her original binding may be done & accomplished."
