Petition #20986032

Abstract

M. Banner states that in 1859 "he purchased the unexpired term of service of Samuel Hodge." Banner reports that Hodge "being a negro so held to labor for a term of years did abscond and run away from the service of your petitioner," and he states that he went to great expense to have Hodge captured and placed in jail. Banner believes that "if he would again take him into his family and release him from confinement, he would again run away ... and escape into some free state where your petitioner would not be able to recover him." The petitioner asks that Hodge's term of service be extended and that he be given permission to sell Hodge.
