John H. Caples states that his negro apprentice, David Briner, is of "wilful and disobedient and worthless character." Briner has run away several times and Caples let him go live with his neighbor, Samuel Linthicum, "but with no good result." Caples believes Briner to be "a wilfully depraved boy" who is "setting a bad example to other boys in a similar situation." Caples "prays your honors, to order him to be disposed of that he may recover his money spent for his purchase and expenses and trouble in recovering him, and that the neighborhood may be rid of his bad example."
