Petition #20986034

Abstract

Daniel and Mary Tydings Dorsey state that Richard Tydings possessed a four-year-old slave girl named Elinor in 1840 or 1841. The Dorseys explain that Tydings gave Elinor to his daughter, the petitioner, "as her own absolute property" and that Tydings had the transfer recorded on the county books, with Daniel Dorsey as owning the slave "for his said wife." Tydings recently died and in his will he gave Elinor to Mary with the stipulation that Elinor should be freed in 1865. Although the Dorseys claim full ownership of Elinor, they cite that "the said girl now a woman twenty two years old has been appraised as Elinor Cromwell and returned in the Inventory to this court." The petitioners ask that Dr. Samuel Ridout, executor of Tydings's estate, be summoned to answer their charges and that Elinor "be stricken from said Inventory by the approval of this Court."
