Petition #20986038

Abstract

Richard O. Crisp asserts that his term slave named Lewis "ran away from your Petitioner on Monday in Easter Holidays." Lewis was later "arrested and lodged in jail in Baltimore." When Crisp appeared before the court, asking that Lewis's term of service be extended, he was informed that Lewis also had to appear in court. Crisp removed Lewis from jail and "had him whipped by the Dept Sheriff thinking that it would tend to reform him," but Lewis ran away again and "Lodged himself in Jail in Baltimore where your petitioner found him after advertising him." Crisp asks that Lewis's term of service be extended and that he be permitted to sell him.
