Petition #20986045

Abstract

William Pumphrey affirms that he is the owner of James Edwards, a term slave who is to serve until 1 June 1863. Pumphrey explains that "the said negro slave as aforesaid ran away and absconded from the service of your Petitioner" several times during the course of his ownership. The petitioner has warned Edwards of the consequences should he continue to run away, but the warnings "have not had the effect of mending the habits of the said negro." Edwards is now "confined in the Jail of Anne Arundel County for safe keeping the said negro absolutely refusing to return to the service of your Petitioner his owner and master as aforesaid." Pumphrey asks that Edwards's term of service be extended and that he be granted permission to sell the term slave.
