Caroline Lee disavows the assertions made by her husband, Stephen Lee, in his petition for divorce. She claims that his allegations charging her with engaging in an affair with Frederick J. Watts of Baltimore are "most false and scandalous." She states that she has every intention of defending herself from these claims but that "as his wife she is a resident of his Home and family and in person and property entirely subject to his control and she has no means whatever ... to employ Counsel." In addition, Caroline argues that her husband owns a large personal estate of his own right and therefore has no reason to order the court to sell her estate, as he requested in his petition. She asks the court to compel slaveholder Stephen Lee to pay "a sum of money sufficient to defray the necessary expenses of this suit on her behalf not less than three hundred dollars."
