Petition #20986118

Abstract

John Mason, administrator of the estate of the late Virginia Mason, reports that the estate inventory contains certain inaccuracies. He cites that the inventory charges the deceased with an interest in a slave girl named Fanny "when in fact the said Virginia Mason at the time of her death had no present interest in said girl." Furthermore, he points out "that the negro man Dan valued in said appraisement at $550.00 is now, and has been for some time ... wholly deranged so as to be of no value for work, but in the contrary an actual charge upon your petitioner." Mason wants both slaves stricken from the inventory and some allowance to be made for the support and maintenance of Dan. The petitioner also points out that he has two estate slaves, Guy and Ned, in his possession. The "disturbed condition of the country" has made it difficult for Mason "to dispose of them with any advantage to the estate."
