Petition #20986127

Abstract

In April 1856, Thomas Burket indentured his eleven-year-old son, Solomon Henry Burket, to William Walters "to learn the art, trade or mystery of waiter or House Servant." Walters reports that Burket frequently "absented himself from his service," forcing Walters to hire someone else to carry out Burket's duties. The petitioner states that he "admonished him of the impropriety of his conduct" but surmises that the apprentice is "incorrigible." Walters believes that Burket's behavior "is the result of his evil associations in the City" and he suggests that Burket be removed from Baltimore and "he be placed where he would be under proper restraint." He asks the court to extend the indenture and allow him to sell it "to some person resident of one of the Counties in this state."
