Petition #20986130

Abstract

Free person of color James A. Chaney states that William Dorbacker took his two sons, Isaac and James, before the court and represented the children "as being orphans and unprovided for," thereby inducing the court to bind said children to him as his apprentices. Chaney charges that Dorbacker "hath failed to perform the obligations" of the indenture and he "hath treated the children with neglect & cruelty." Chaney states that his sons ran away from Dorbacker and sought refuge at his house. In response, Dorbacker "also came there in company with several police officers by him employed for that purpose ... and having caused the officers to drag your petitioner from his bed to the Southern Police Station where he was ... most cruelly beaten and unhumanly lacerated with a cowhide and other things." Chaney asks that Dorbacker be summoned to answer these charges and that indentures be cancelled.
