Petition #20986131

Abstract

On 9 October 1861, Elizabeth Houston indentured her granddaughter, Rachel Ann Johnson, a free person of color, to Thomas Yearley. Yearley reports that Johnson ran away and "that upon her being brought back she was found to [be] sick and not improving." The petitioner called in a doctor who "found she was suffering from venerial." Yearley asks the court to cancel the indenture and release him "from all responsibility incurred in accepting said girl as an apprentice."
