Petition #20986135

Abstract

On 10 April 1859, Jesse Rollins, a free person of color, apprenticed his fourteen-year-old son, John H. Rollins, to John W. and George H. Anderson to learn the trade of a house servant. Petitioner Edward Rollins, uncle of the said apprentice, claims that the Andersons have violated the contract and Maryland laws in several ways: they have more than the legal number of apprentices; they transferred John Rollins's indenture without notifying the court; and that John Rollins "was removed beyond the limits of the City of Baltimore." Edward Rollins reports that the Rollins family cannot find John, "although diligent search and inquiry has been made." He asks the court to subpoena the Andersons and issue them a writ of habeas corpus for John H. Rollins.

Result: Dismissed.
