Petition #20986402

Abstract

On 16 September 1858, Emily Anderson indentured her nine-year-old daughter, Mary Ann, a free person of color, [the father being a slave] to George Waterman to learn "plain sewing and housework." In May 1862, thirteen-year-old Mary Ann ran away. Waterman says that she "has not been in his employment since that period." He asks the court to cancel the indenture "as your petitioner does not desire, to retain the said Mary Ann Anderson as his apprentice."
