Almira Johnson, a free woman of color and mother of minor, Frank Johnson, petitions for the "management and control of the said infant." She explains that, for some months now, Frank has been in the possession of Archie B. Price, who "refuses to deliver him up to her holding him without authority of law." She claims that she is "entitled as the mother of said infant to have the control of him and manage and direct his service." Johnson asks for a writ of habeas corpus so that she can regain the "custody and care" of her son.
