Mary Shotwell states that her father, Lewis Taliaferro, gave her husband Robert several slaves after their marriage in 1826. Mary also claims that Robert conveyed five slaves and one hundred shares of bank stock to her in trust "to have and enjoy the profits, proceeds, and dividends of the said negroes & stock for & during her life and at her death to belong to the children of your oratrix." In 1840, Mary divorced Robert. She now asks for an accounting of Robert's estate at the time of their divorce and she asks that she be given one-half of its estimated value.
