In 1827, John Mullen gave four slaves to Thomas Mullen to hold in trust for the maintenance of his daughter, Latha Mullen Taylor, during her life. Taylor died in 1840, leaving several slaves to her relatives. Since the petitioners, as relatives of Taylor, are widely dispersed and the slaves cannot be "equitably divided," they request permission to sell the slaves and divide the profits.
