William L. Harris reports that Pryor Grant mortgaged a female slave and her two children in March 1843 to secure payment of a $400-debt owed to Harris. He further states that said mortgage was "to be void on condition that he paid to your Orator the said sum of money with interest ... by the first day of may 1843." Harris charges "that the whole amount of said sum both principal & Interest is still due & owing." The petitioner therefore prays that Grant be decreed to discharge the said debt or "on default thereof that he be barred & foreclosed from all equity of redemption to the mortgaged property and that the same may by order & decree of this court be sold and from the proceeds of said sale the said debt interest & cost may be paid."
