George and Evalina Coopwood state that, in 1839 or 1840, Lemuel Prewitt, the father of the said Evalina, conveyed four slaves "in trust to Elisha D. Prewitt, for the use, benefit and support, and maintainance of" of his daughter Evalina. The petitioners assert that they held said slaves "for the space of two days; and that since that time the said Elisha D. Prewitt has taken the same ... "forcibly, by stratagem and fraud out of their said possession." The petitioners ask that Elisha Prewitt answer their charges against him.
