James B. D. Hanham states that James Hill was named administrator of the estate of George Brister. Hill asserted, as administrator, that "it was impracticable to distribute & divide said slaves among the heirs of said Intestate" and therefore petitioned the court "to order a sale of the same." However, from 1844 to May 1846, Hill retained possession of said slaves on his plantation. Having purchased a 5/8 interest in the Brister estate, Hanham asks that Hill "account for a fair hire of the negroes of said estate so long as they were in his service."
