Petition #21084720

Abstract

In 1830, William Hightower Jr. purchased a slave from James Rowsey. As partial payment for the slave, it was agreed that Hightower would furnish Sarah Rowsey a mulatto slave named Mary “for and during the life time of Mrs Rowsey.” Hightower died in 1837; in 1839, Sarah Rowsey and her husband James sold Sarah's life interest in Mary and her son John to Wilson Goodwin. Goodwin took the slaves from Alabama and brought them to Mississippi. Of the opinion that Mary "has given birth to two or perhaps three children who are alive," the petitioners pray that Levi Lloyd, in whose possession Mary and her family are, be enjoined from removing said slaves; that an immediate division of said slaves be ordered "according to the rights of all the parties interested"; and that, in lieu of such division, that "security may be taken to render their rights safe."
