Petition #21084813

Abstract

The grandchildren of Alexander English Sr. represent that in 1833 their grandfather gave the slave Betsy, her husband Peter, and her son Jacob to their three older brothers. Their grandfather stipulated in the deed of gift that "in case the said negro wench has any more children [they were] to be equally divided among the rest of" his son John's children. The petitioners state that Betsy has had five more children, but that James Coleman of Alabama holds part of them as his slaves. They note that they filed a suit against Coleman, but he moved the slaves out of Mississippi before the case was heard. As Coleman does own land in Mississippi, the petitioners ask for an attachment on that land until they receive compensation for the loss of their slaves.
