Petition #21084815

Abstract

Francis English represents that in 1833 Alexander English gave the slave Betsy, her husband Peter, and her son Jacob to the children of his son John English; Jacob specifically was given to Francis English. The petitioner now states that James Coleman has possession of Jacob "by some pretended purchase" from Francis's father John. Francis avows that his father had no right to sell the slave to Coleman and that "Coleman has no title to said negro as against your orator." Francis filed for a writ of attachment on the slave, but before the papers could be served, Coleman took Jacob out of the state. Citing that Coleman owns land in Mississippi, the petitioner seeks an attachment on the land until he receives compensation for his loss.
