Alexander English represents that in 1833 Alexander English gave the slave Betsy, her husband Peter, and her son Jacob to the children of his son John English; Betsy was given to Alexander English. The petitioner now states that James Coleman has possession of Betsy "through a pretended purchase" from Alexander's father John. Alexander avows that his father had no right to sell the slave to Coleman and that Coleman "has no title to said woman as against your Orator." The petitioner prays that Coleman be enjoined from removing Betsy from the state until his case can be heard.
