Allen W. Walker, guardian of minor John R. Brown, reports the accidental death of a slave owned by his ward while hired to Moulton Parkman and seeks permission to accept a partial payment of the annual hire fee. Walker states that the slave Mariah was hired to Parkman for $129 for the year 1853. On 1 February 1853, Mariah was burned "in consequence of her bed clothes becoming inflamed whilst She was asleep"; Mariah died at the end of February. Walker discloses that Parkman refuses to pay the full amount of her hire but is willing to pay $10.75, "the pro rata hire ... for one month." Walker asks the court to accept his report of Mariah's death and to authorize him to accept the money offered by Parkman.
