Petition #21086601

Abstract

Thomas Christian, executor of the late Thomas Emmons Cannon, asks to be discharged from his duties. Christian states that court-appointed commissioners appraised Cannon’s estate, which "consisted alone of negroes with the exception of a mare saddle and bridle," and that some of the said slaves were distributed among his legatees; "certain negroes were withheld from division for the purpose of sale to pay the debts of said Estate." The petitioner reports that "other debts have been proved against said Estate" and that "by the action of the United States Government manumitting all the slaves belonging to said Estate without compensation to the owners, he has been deprived from making provision for the payment of said debts." Avowing that "there is nothing in the hands of said Executor except said $73.17 in confederate notes and said Estate is entirely insolvent," Christian "would therefore respectfully tender his resignation and pray to be discharged from all other or further liability or accounting for or on account of said Estate."
