Petition #21086606

Abstract

Sally M. Yerger, the executrix of George S. Yerger, states that the said George died in April 1860 and that his said estate is insolvent. The petitioner reports that the estate's property "mainly consisted in slaves, who have been liberated and Emancipated by the Act of the Government of the United States." Yerger recalls that "the plantation where the personal property was located was abandoned in the year 1862 -- the growing crop left standing in the field in consequence of the proximity of the Army of the United States." She further avows that the livestock "left upon and about the said plantation ... were subsequently preyed upon not only by the Army of the United States but the people at large." These circumstances, Yerger submits, rendered it impossible to make an accurate account of said estate. She therefore prays for an order to sell the decedent's interest in lands that were abandoned during the Civil War.
