She informs the court that Mitchell moved to Illinois in 1807, taking Lydia with him.  She further asserts that upon Mitchell's death her mother sued and received her freedom in Illinois from Mitchell's widow, who was the administratrix of the estate.  Marianne maintains that Lydia remained in Illinois, where she had several children.  She insists that she and her siblings lived \"in the uninterrupted injoyment of [their] liberty\" until a few days ago when Alexander P. Fields and Elijah Mitchell had her arrested, imprisoned, and brought to St. Louis, where she is detained as a slave.
