Petition #21183609

Abstract

Thornton, "a free person of color," informs the court that his mother Lucinda, a mulatto woman, who was perhaps born in Tennessee, was the slave of Isham Harrison. He further states that Harrison moved Lucinda to Gallatin County, Illinois, where she resided for more than three years and "that by the laws then in force in said Territory she by her residence as aforesaid became a free person and after she became free the said Lucinda gave Birth to your petitioner." Now held in slavery by Amy Harrison, the petitioner prays "that he may be permitted to sue said Amy Harrison as a poor person by Cornelius Campbell his next friend" to establish his freedom.
