Abstract
Ben claims that "he is now held in Slavery in St Louis by Dr Thomas J White for William L Woods who claims your petitioner as his Slave." Ben explains that he was "hired to Labor ... in the State of Illinois [as a hand in the coal mines] where he was kept at Labor with the Knowledge & consent of Said Woods for the Space of Seven Weeks." He therefore "prays that he may be permitted to sue as a poor person to establish his freedom."
Result: Petition granted; plea of trespass filed.
