Abstract

Polly Wash claims that she is entitled to her freedom because she "was hired out ... to one Capt Payne of the Steamboat Banner, as chambermaid and in that capacity of chambermaid made several trips up the Illinois river as far as Peoria, for wages at the rate of fifteen dollars a month & at one time within the jurisdiction of the state of Illinois was detained for about five weeks." Now held by in slavery by Joseph Magehan, the petitioner prays "that she may be permitted to sue as a poor person in order to establish her freedom."
