Petition #21184001

Abstract

According to witnesses in this case, Robert Loughridge and Reuben H. Cranmar live beside each other, but they do not get along. The witnesses have testified that Loughridge has, on several occasions, threatened to shoot Cranmar. On 7 February 1840, Cranmar was shot in the shoulder. Witnesses accused Perry and Hanson, two slaves hired by Loughridge, of shooting Cranmar from Loughridge's stable and hiding the gun in the hay loft. They reported that Loughridge laughed about the shooting. The state charged Perry and Hanson "with shooting one Reuben Cranmar, with intent to kill" and indicted Loughridge "with being accessory, before the fact of shooting one Reuben Cranmar, with intent to kill him." In his petition, Loughridge asserts that "the minds of the inhabitants of said County are so prejudiced against your petitioner that a fair trial Can not be had therein." Loughridge requests a change of venue.
