Petition #21184209
- St. Louis County, Missouri. cicra April 5, 1842. - April 5, 1842.
- Court: Circuit
- Salutation: To the Hon. Bryan Mullanphy Judge of the St. Louis Circuit Court
Abstract
Jinny Jackson, a woman of color, asks the court for permission to sue for her freedom. She states that Richard Dallam held her mother Pegg and eight other slaves in 1787, at which time he executed a deed of manumission that freed each slave after a specific term of servitude. The deed also stipulated that "all the children born of sd. negroes to be absolutely free at the age of twenty one." Citing this deed as her grounds for freedom, Jackson prays that she be allowed "to sue as a poor person in order to establish her right to freedom." Related petitions reveal that Jackson indeed lived free for many years before being claimed by James Fraser.
