Amelia Green, a free person of color, purchased her daughter Nancy Handy from William T. Howe. Being old and "not long expecting to enjoy the pleasures of this world," Green fears what might happen to Nancy following her death. The "womb of time is not open to inspect what may hereafter be brought forth or in what manner it may affect her daughter." She therefore asks for a license of emancipation.
