Nathan Hunt Sr. represented by Nathan Hunt Jr., Joseph Unthank and Josiah Unthank petition for the manumission of Scipio Leatherman, a tanner and tanyard manager. Having purchased Scipio in 1814, the petitioners relate that he is a man "of good character, honest and industrious in his habits & humble & inoffensive in his manners." In addition, he has repaid the three men the amount of his purchase price. Scipio, who has a wife and children, "is about removing to the State of Indianna," but he will need legal documents that identify him as a free person of color. The petitioners ask the court to authorize his manumission. No information is provided as to whether Scipio's wife and children were slaves or free.
