Free black Job Hazell petitions to free Polly, his wife of thirty years, "in consequence of and as a reward for meritorious services by her performed." He also asks to emancipate their thirteen-year-old daughter Mary Ann. Hazell notes that Polly assisted him in saving enough money to purchase her from her owner in 1817; she also raised a family with "habits of sobriety and industry." Although their other children remain in bondage, they "are valuable servants to their respective owners."
