Abstract

In 1812, Christopher Burkitt, a free man of color, purchased his wife, Charity, now between fifty and sixty years old, from William Righton of Chowan County. He has recently purchased from Righton his daughter Peggy, age fourteen. He asks the court permission to manumit Charity and Peggy, as well as a second daughter, Nancy, born in his family after he had purchased Charity from Righton.
