Harrison Douglass, a free man of color, married Annis, a slave woman belonging to Elizabeth L. Blair of Edenton, who later gave Douglass "a Deed of Gift for the said girl Annis & with a hope that she might be liberated." Explaining that she has "always supported an irreproachable character," Douglass asks the court to issue an emancipation decree.
