In 1821, Polly Joyner, who owned six or seven slaves, married William Orren, and lived with him for the next eleven years. In 1830, however, William took a load of tobacco south and never returned. Polly complains that her husband managed her affairs poorly and she is now nearly destitute. To prevent the starvation of her children, she made two small crops but now fears the one of them will be confiscated by her husband's creditors. She seeks alimony of "all the property She may hereafter acquire."
