Fanny Sowers petitions for divorce on the grounds of adultery. She explains that her husband Samuel is now attempting to get possession of and sell "one valuable negro Slave named Sam about 15 or 16 years old, worth 6 or 8 hundred Dollars, to which she was entitled from her fathers Estate." Unless the court acts her husband will "run off said slave & leave himself so as to prevent your Petitioner from receiving allimony." She would be left "helpless and without any means of Support."
